Wright described the civilization phase as "an interesting blend of a very simple SimCity and a very simple Civilization." You could build and rearrange individual buildings in your cities (as with everything else in Spore, you can design or download your own buildings). Wright loaded up a saved game where he was already very advanced. Here, his creatures had already developed intelligence and built a civilization - he was now competing with other civilizations in order to dominate and unify the planet. Conquering the World Since he's shown off the creature phase of the game at various events before, Wright was keen to jump right into the civilization phase.

Thanks to Wright's guided tour we discovered some new things about the later stages of the game, and it was a real treat watching how the crowd lit up and responded to different parts of the game.

We've been fortunate enough to try our hand at Spore a couple of times (see our hands-on at EA and our follow-up visit at E3), but for most attendees this was their first taste of Spore in action. After talking with Comic-Con attendees at length about the many inspirations and ideals behind Spore, game designer Will Wright sat down at his laptop and fired up the game itself for the crowd.
